ANTIOQUIA AND THE LOCAL CHURCH

“And in the church that was in Antioch there were some prophets and doctors, namely: Barnabas and Simeon called Niger, and Lucius, Cyrene, and Manaem, who had been created with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. And as they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Depart me from Barnabas and Saul to the work to which I have called them. Then, fasting and praying, and putting their hands on them, they sent them away. ” Acts 13: 1-3

The text suggests that each church or ministry should have a plural team composed, in particular, of solid ministry in teaching the Word, added to the ministry sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit, to give direction to the local church.

JERUSALEM

JERUSALEM

“And after Paul and Barnabas had had no little argument and discussion with them, the brothers made a decision to send Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them to the Apostles and the rulers of the church at Jerusalem about this question.

15:3  So they, being sent on their way by the church, went through Phoenicia and Samaria, giving news of the salvation of the Gentiles, to the great joy of all the brothers.

15:4  And when they came to Jerusalem, they had a meeting with the church and the Apostles and the rulers, and they gave an account of all the things which God had done through them.

15:5  But some of the Pharisees, who were of the faith, got up and said, It is necessary for these to have circumcision and to keep the law of Moses."

Acts 15:2-5

 What is a mutual coverage?

It is an online meeting / gathering of pastors and Christian leaders, whose churches may be structurally different from one another, including different denominations or even different doctrinal views, but with fundamental biblical doctrines aligned (Heb. 6: 1-2), aiming at objective mutual spiritual coverage, that is, each one prays, cooperates and “covers” the other spiritually, promoting unity, friendship, counseling support and prophetic vision of the Body of Christ.

How it worked?

Paul and Barnabas at the Jerusalem meeting with other apostles and leaders contemplated reports, doctrinal adjustments, counseling, testimonies. This meeting was coordinated by Tiago. We could adopt this meeting under the name "mutual coverage".

What does the Bible say about Mutual Coverage?

In the New Testament we see a very clear example concerning the churches of Antioch and Jerusalem. Prophets and teachers were leaders of the Church of Antioch: Paul, Barnabas, Simeon (also called Niger), Lucius of Cirine, and Manaem (who had been created with Herod the tetrarch). They heard the Holy Spirit appoint Paul and Barnabas for a specific call and sent them to fulfill it. Everyone was part of the leadership, but above all was the Holy Spirit. (Acts 13: 1-3).

During the fulfillment of this call, Paul and Barnabas had doctrinal differences with some brothers in Judea with regard to new converts who were not Jews (so-called Gentiles). For consistency in the Church, everyone went up to Jerusalem, to consult the apostles and the elders, so that everyone would walk in unity (Acts 15: 2-5) and align these small differences between them.

We then see the Church of Antioch representing the local churches and Jerusalem functioning as that group of elders and apostles, who decide together, under the Holy Spirit, larger issues. We realize that Jerusalem serves as a reference for local churches not to walk alone, providing friendship and spiritual support.

How will the meetings work?

1.  Initial praise (5 minutes)

2.  Presentation

3.  2 to 4 pastors will teach pre-selected topics (about 5 to 10 minutes each)

4.  Prophetic word (can be live or recorded)

5.  Intercession for apostolic and led ministries

6.  Closure

7.  Song of Worship

How were the ministers chosen?

Just as Joshua and Caleb were the only remnants of a generation that died all in the desert without entering the Promised Land, we believe that in our day there are men and women of God who passed through the desert, saw the mistakes and successes of the past and today they can be used by God to take a crowd to the Promised Land. The coordinators and ministers will serve as a reference to the other brothers in ethics, honesty and direction of the Holy Spirit.
